  1. Accountant

    The Centre for Environmental Rights is looking for a qualified accountant to join our finance team. Based in Cape Town the key responsibility of this position is to provide the technical oversight in managing the Centre’s financial resources. Reporting directly to the Head of Operations, the accountant will be responsible for managing the various aspects of financial and accounting transactions including funding and budget management, payroll cycle, financial and budget reporting and planning. The successful candidate must have audit experience and considerable and practical knowledge of various financial and accounting policies and procedures and compliance obligations as well as a strong understanding of organisational risk exposure and mitigation measures. This position is considered a specialist role who needs to be able to contribute towards the Centre’s short to long-term financial and strategic objectives. The successful candidate needs to be disciplined and highly organised, meticulous, honest and a trustworthy person with a keen eye in scrutinizing the various accounting transactions and reports, as well as managing the procurement payment process and engaging with our service providers and stakeholders as required. We are looking for someone who can work independently but who also has strong supervisory experience and is able to work with our management team and staff members in general. Based in Johannesburg or Cape Town, the successful candidate will join a team of lawyers who are challenging corporations and financial institutions, including development finance institutions, to improve transparency and implement policies and decisions to advance environmental and climate justice. The ideal candidate can produce legal and financial research to support and advance to hold corporates accountable for their environmental, social, and climate impacts. The ideal candidate understands the need to produce quality research, sometimes under time pressure, that is useful to civil society and community-based organisations. The ideal candidate is also able to contribute to innovative strategies to increase and amplify support for and pressure on corporations and financial institutions to reform their climate targets and ambition, ensure adherence to environmental, social and governance standards and meet local and international standards of best practice. This position is for a researcher with two to four years of experience in legal and financial research. The researcher also has a passion for environmental justice, and the ability to use law, financial policy analysis, and research to challenge the financing and support of fossil fuel projects.
