The Centre for Environmental Rights is calling for applications for an Internship with a special focus on our Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement work and Ask Karabo project. We are looking for a bright and enthusiastic candidate who has a special interest and passion for environmental and climate justice and able to work closely and engage with our various community partners and stakeholders. QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • An LLB degree or equivalent qualification,
  • A strong commitment to social and environmental justice,
  • Excellent research/writing skills
  • An understanding of how activism contributes to social and environmental justice, and be committed to promoting and defending the role of community organisations and activists in realising [environmental] justice.
  • Familiarity with the use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Outlook & calendars, and virtual applications like MS Teams, Zoom, Google docs, etc.
  • A positive demeanour and professional, and “can do” attitude
  • Punctual and very good with time management
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly focused and organised, trustworthy, and can multi-task
  • Can work independently but also can work in collaboration with team members

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To provide general administrative support and assistance primarily to the CME Numbers Matter Campaign, Ask Karabo project and other related work outputs as required.
  • Organising meetings and coordinating communication and information sharing with various stakeholders and community partners in general such as workshops and trainings, dissemination of materials, minute taking, assisting follow-up action items, etc.
  • Assisting with enquiries and requests received from the CER law clinic as it pertains to CME and environmental violations
  • Collating data and tracking CME statistics on the various forums including CER’s own platforms such as Ask Karabo, Environmental Rights Violations Portal.
  • Assisting with collating and answering questions on CME and environmental rights violations on the Ask Karabo portal
  • Assisting with strategic communications on the project
  • Assisting with the drafting of the final report on CME
  • Providing onsite administrative support during meetings, workshops, trainings, etc.
  • Assisting or liaising with travel bookings, accommodation, transport, etc.
  • Providing onsite administrative support during meetings, workshops, trainings, etc.
  • Willing and able to travel on occasions to support the various events and activities of CER

SALARY

The salary for the position is R 175 000.00 per annum (total cost to company). This is a one year-fixed term position from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2027.
