Description:

Cullinan & Associates Inc (C&A) was founded in 1994 as Terry Winstanley Attorneys and was the first specialist environmental law firm to be established in South Africa. Cormac Cullinan joined the firm in 1999 on his return from London where he had founded EnAct International, a specialist environmental law and policy consultancy which worked in more than 40 countries. The partners and other attorneys in the firm have played an important role in the development of environmental law and policy in South Africa since the early 1990s and continue to do so. The firms is committed not only to providing an excellent service to its clients, but also to upholding the environmental right in the Constitution and protecting the environment for current and future generations.

Cullinan & Associates Inc (C&A) (previously Winstanley & Cullinan Inc) is a specialist law firm that advises on all aspects of environmental and sustainable development law, including cultural heritage and land use planning issues. It is recognised by the authoritative Practical Law Company (formerly Global Counsel) as a leading South African environmental law firm and is described by The Legal 500 as “a first-class environmental firm”. Its mission is to provide its clients with clear, practical and definitive advice that promotes sustainable development.

The directors of C&A all have Masters degrees in environmental law and have specialised in this field since the early 1990's. They are assisted by Glendyr Nel and Megan Adderley.

In recognition of the growing contribution of green businesses to sustainability the firm has expanded its capacity to offer corporate law services to green entrepreneurs and businesses such as renewable energy, clean technology and sustainable investments enterprises. Barry Adams, a senior commercial lawyer with more than 20 years experience, is a consultant to the firm and adds his expertise to that of the firms core lawyers to provide cutting edge legal services to green businesses and entrepreneurs.

In addition to their substantial expertise in environmental law, all of the firm’s attorneys have expertise in other areas of law relevant to environmental issues including commercial law, administrative law, constitutional law, maritime law and litigation.

The firm prides itself on high quality work that combines rigorous intellectual analysis with a practical approach to problem solving. The quality of the firm’s work is underpinned by the excellent academic qualifications and extensive experience of all of the firm’s attorneys, together with their personal commitment to excellence. In addition, each attorney’s work undergoes internal review by colleagues to ensure that clients benefit from the firm’s combined expertise.

While the firm is based in Cape Town and Durban, it undertakes work for a range of clients throughout the country. C&A's private sector clients include individuals, other law firms, and major companies in the property development, petro-chemicals, mining, manufacturing, forestry, pulp and paper and waste management sectors. The firm’s lawyers have provided specialist advice on environmental law matters and drafted legislation for national, provincial and local governments in South Africa, and in the South African Development Community (SADC) region. The firm’s sustained involvement in environmental law matters for public and private sector clients makes it ideally placed to provide definitive advice in this rapidly-developing field.

As part of its commitment to social justice, C&A does work at reduced rates for non-governmental organisations and, in appropriate cases, on a pro bono basis for the Legal Resources Centre's Environmental Justice Programme, the Black Lawyers Association and several other public interest organisations as well as for the Law Society of South Africa.

C&A's lawyers also provide consultancy services on a wider range of environmental governance issues in South Africa and internationally, through its associated consultancy firm, EnAct International.
