Barend was born in Koffiefontein, Free State. He matriculated at Harrismith High School in 1982 and began working at the Harrismith Magistrate's Office. Barend obtained the Bluris degree (UNISA) in 1985. In 1988 he was appointed as Public Prosecutor in Harrismith and began working as a Magistrate in Kroonstad in 1989.
Barend obtained a Diploma Legum in 1992 and an LLB in 1993. In 1994 he was appointed as a Partner at the firm Grimbeek De Hart & Van Rooyen (Kroonstad). He became a director when the firm was converted into a company.
He is a founding member of Kruger Basson Inc. which was established in Kroonstad in 2001. The said firm was renamed De Hart Kruger Basson & Schoeman Inc. He joined Rauch-Gertenbach Inc. (Mossel Bay) in 2006. He became a director in May 2007.
Barend has experience in a wide range of litigation fields, but specialises in personal injury and legal liability claims. He assists clients in bringing claims against the Road Accident Fund, government institutions such as the Minister of Safety and Security (Police), the Department of Health, Municipalities and other large institutions such as Eskom, Transnet, Telkom and shopping centres. He also handles civil matters such as contractual matters and aspects relating to the National Credit Act. He specialises in family law matters such as divorces, children's rights and cohabitation relationships. In 2015, Barend obtained a master's degree in family law from UNISA.
Barend was a regular writer of legal articles published by the Mossel Bay Advertiser and has taught various courses on the National Credit Act, legislation regarding the Road Accident Fund and family law relationships.
Barend has an active interest in Private International Law and is currently studying the connecting factor that determines the matrimonial property regime of different citizens. The importance of this aspect is particularly emphasized if a prenuptial agreement is being drawn up.
In 2024, Barend Kruger and Dirk Schoeman decided to go into partnership and together they started Kruger-Schoeman Attorneys in Stilbaai, with a further office in Oudtshoorn.
