History:

Paula Conway (née Haynes) holds BA and LLB degrees from WITS University and an Advanced Diploma in Banking Law from RAU (now the University of Johannesburg). Admitted as an attorney in 1994, she has built an impressive cross-jurisdictional career, practising in South Africa, Australia, and the UK.

Her experience includes roles at leading law firms and as in-house counsel at major international banks such as Deutsche Bank and HSBC. She is also admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales and Western Australia, and has lectured in property and commercial law at the Legal Practice Council of Western Australia.

With over 21 years of experience, Paula specialises in banking and finance law, advising on a broad range of products and transactions including:

  • Treasury instruments (cash equities, bonds, securities lending, repos, OTC derivatives)
  • Master agreements (ISDAs, GMSLAs, GMRAs, BAFTs)
  • Global trade and receivables finance
  • Credit and lending (bilateral/syndicated) and security structures
  • Corporate finance and cash payments
  • She has deep knowledge of both international and South African financial regulatory frameworks, including the Banks Act, Financial Markets Act, Exchange Control Regulations, EMIR, MiFID II, Dodd-Frank, FAIS, FICA, and others. Paula has actively contributed to the development of legislation through policy submissions and implementation advisory.

In addition to her financial law expertise, Paula advises on general commercial matters, contract law, and company law, including business rescue proceedings.
