History:

Romany Sutherland is a South African attorney and medical law specialist with two decades’ experience in medical negligence and complex healthcare litigation. Raised on a small farm in Mpumalanga near the KwaZulu-Natal border, her longstanding interest in medicine continues to inform her practical, evidence-driven approach to medico-legal work.

Romany began her tertiary studies in nursing (BCur, Stellenbosch University), with clinical training in a large tertiary hospital, before changing course to law and completing her LLB at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (2005). She served her articles in Johannesburg at a specialist medical malpractice practice and later helped establish and run a clinical negligence department in Cape Town. Her experience includes acting for patients and families as well as for healthcare practitioners, hospitals and state institutions, giving her a balanced understanding of both clinical standards and litigation risk.

In March 2025, she took over the reights at Lanser Liedtke and Associates (LLA INC) and one year later, she has rebranded the firm now known as Lanser Sutherland Inc Romany also holds a Certificate in Medical Law and practises as a mediator, with a focus on healthcare and personal injury disputes. She also has a coaching qualification from SACAP.
