Sarel grew up in Bloemfontein, matriculating at Sentraal High School. As an undergraduate student at the University of the Free State, he obtained his B.Com degree, after which he went on to complete his articles of clerkship at Naudes in Bloemfontein and later Van der Spuy & Partners, in Paarl and Cape Town. After obtaining an LL.B at UNISA, Sarel was admitted as an attorney, notary and conveyancer of the High Court of South Africa in 1982. He has been a partner at Van der Spuy & Partners since 1984.
Sarel has extensive experience in commercial law fields spanning various property transactions. His core expertise includes drafting of commercial contracts, ante nuptial contracts, wills and trust deeds, along with the registration of servitudes and other related conveyancing activities. He has also served on the governing body of two schools in Paarl, and acted as a commissioner at the Small Claims Court.
When Sarel is not attending to the numerous responsibilities that comes with being a partner at Van der Spuy & Partners, you may find him reading a book or enjoying the outdoors.
