Rui obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1989 and his Bachelor of Law degree in 1991, both from the University of Witwatersrand.

Rui Marto is the Managing Director of Marto Lafitte & Associates Inc. and a senior attorney with over 30 years of legal experience. He specialises in commercial and civil litigation, property law, contracts, and corporate advisory services, and is recognised for delivering strategic, solution-oriented legal counsel across a range of complex matters.

Under Rui’s leadership, the firm has built a strong track record in commercial litigation, conveyancing, and collections, consistently ranking among the top performers on Nedbank’s Foreclosures and Collections Panel nationwide. He is known for his direct, analytical approach to problem-solving and his ability to guide clients through legal complexity with clarity and confidence.

 
Leadership & Industry Engagement
Beyond the courtroom, Rui plays an active role in the legal and business communities. He currently serves as:

• Chairperson of the EU Chamber of Commerce in South Africa
• Director of the South African Portuguese Chamber of Commerce (SAPCC)

Through these roles, he engages regularly with business leaders, international organisations, and government departments including DTIC, Invest SA, DSBD, and the EU Delegation in South Africa.

Rui is a respected speaker and legal commentator. He has appeared on Business Day TV, African Business Radio, and has presented at seminars for SAPOA, Rotary, and private investor events. He is also a contributor to Real Estate Investor Magazine, Transform SA, and the SAPCC eMagazine.
