Mr Pretorius obtained the degrees BA and BProc respectively from the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Port Elizabeth.

He played rugby for the first teams of Stellenbosch University,University of Port Elizabeth, Villagers RFC and also represented Eastern Province, Boland, Western Province and SA Gazelle's (SA u/23).

He is a keen golfer and a member of Erinvale Golf Club.

Mr Pretorius is an admitted conveyancer, executor of estates, a trustee of various trusts and a member of the Cape Law Society.
