Clive is a thorough Capetonian. He was born and grew up and was schooled in Pinelands, both junior and high school and then subsequently went on and obtained his degrees from UCT graduating in 1981. He obtained a first class pass in his final year in the Law of Succession and was awarded the class medal.
After 2 years compulsory military service, he commenced his career doing his articles with Bisset Boehmke & McBlain in 1984. He was admitted as an attorney and conveyancer in 1986 and continued as a professional assistant with Bissets for the following 4 years. In 1989 he was also admitted as a notary public. He left Bissets and joined his former principal who had since established his own firm in partnership. This two man partnership lasted for six years until 1996 when Clive left the partnership and established his own firm, Valentine & Associates, in March 1996 in the southern suburbs. He still practises as a sole proprietor from Newlands/Rondebosch/Claremont, Cape Town, Western Cape and trades as Valentine Attorneys.
Outside of law, Clive was a Rotarian for 13 years to May 2010. He is a keen sportsman and has actively participated in road running, tennis & cycling. He rode his 24th Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay cycle tour in March 2020. He is married to Wendy and they have two children, one currently just started at high school and the other at university.
