History:

Sarah was admitted as an attorney in 1997 and has the right of appearance in the High Court. After qualifying she practised in Durban as a litigation and commercial law specialist for two years, then worked in London first on a Public Inquiry under the chairmanship of Lord Nicholas Phillips and then at two large commercial law firms: Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Lawrence Graham.

She joined Cullinan & Associates in 2005 as an associate and became a director of the firm in March 2008. She is also a director of the Cape Town branch of EnAct International. She holds a Masters Degree in environmental law from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Since joining C&A, Sarah’s practice has included providing opinions for clients on all aspects of environmental, heritage and planning law, conducting successful High Court litigation on environmental and mining matters and providing advice on environmental legal compliance to both public and private sector clients. She has a thorough understanding of administrative law and has drafted administrative appeals and responses for various clients, particularly with respect to environmental impact assessments and mining. She advises a number of private sector client on compliance issues and on ISO 14001 certification. She has a particular interest in biodiversity law, which was the subject of her Masters dissertation and has provided advice to several private and public sector clients on the law pertaining to protected areas and biodiversity conservation. She is part of a team advising the National Treasury and Department of Energy on the first procurement phase of renewable energy for the grid including the drafting of a power purchase agreement and advice on carbon trading and regulatory matters pertaining to renewable energy developments. She has also advised clients on option and lease agreements for renewable energy developments and all aspects of the regulatory framework including energy, environmental and land use issues.
