Joseph Lovius founded the firm in 1911. It was a one-man show and Louis Shtein later joined him. After the death of Louis Shtein, Joseph Block joined the firm in approximately 1955.
Thereafter the firm amalgamated with Cecil Meltz in 1965 and was known as Lovius-Block Meltz & Cowan. In 1968, Peter Yazbek joined the firm as a clerk and the firm thereafter changed its name to Lovius-Block.
The firm at present, with our junior partners, was constituted in 1995.
We are a firm that concentrate on Litigation, Conveyancing, Insolvency Law, Estates, Estate Planning, Labour Law and Debt Collecting. Recently Labour Law has become quite an important facet of an attorneys' office and one of our partners specialises in this field. Herklaas Venter [Professional Assistant] specialises in Criminal Law.
On the litigation side, the firm conduct litigation in the Supreme Court of Appeal [the old Appeal Court], the High Court as well as In the Magistrate's Court. The Insolvency Law is practised in the offices of the Master of the Supreme Court where the firm also attends to the winding up of deceased estates.
