Leander Opperman is a senior partner in the Commercial, Property & Litigation (CPL) Department of Adams & Adams. He practices from the firm’s Pretoria office in Gauteng, South Africa.
He holds BLC (1994) and LLB (1996) degrees from the Universities of Pretoria and South Africa respectively and also read for his Master’s degree with specialisation in Banking Law in 2003. In addition, Leander acquired an Advanced Certificate in Insolvency Litigation (cum laude) in 2013 at the University of Pretoria.
Leander has 21 years’ post-qualification experience and his practice areas include commercial litigation and dispute resolution with special focus on specialised recoveries (most of his clients in this regard are banks), Construction Law (he advises developers and employers) and Insolvency and Company Law (here he acts for corporate entities and liquidators/receivers/trustees as well as creditors).
Leander has acted for clients in several multimillion rand construction arbitrations. He has been involved in the successful opposition of numerous business rescue applications by debtors of his banking clients. He is on the panel of 4 of the major banks’ commercial recoveries departments in South Africa.
Under his leadership his team as successfully secured the rights of and recovered substantial sums due to his clients. He has built strong relationships with clients and colleagues and is respected amongst his peers. He often contributes, via short articles, to a group which he created on linked-in known as the “Banking, Construction and Insolvency law (“BCI”) group” (Leander- Opperman-4966727b).
He has also acted for numerous European and US clients in litigation in South Africa, amongst others an Italian client which distributes packaging machinery locally in a recovery action, a Chinese transformer manufacturer in its defence of a multimillion dollar claim for defects and the lessor/owners of commercial aircraft in recovery matters. He has also acted for a Malaysian client in a dispute with a local business rescue practitioner, where Leander successfully secured repayment of the purchase price in respect of an immovable property. He advised a Singaporean client in a liquidation matter involving the delivery by a local entity of military vehicles. He has also acted for a Chinese financier of heavy duty cranes in a portfolio of recoveries matters with litigation stretching as far afield as Botswana.
Leander is a member of the Pretoria Attorneys’ Association and the Legal Practice Council. He previously served as Treasurer of the Pretoria Attorneys’ Association and spends much of his time mentoring junior attorneys.
